28/02 – Fire in the new Lyon CRA

This afternoon a fire broke out in a cell in the new Lyon CRA (opened last January).
According to the information we got:

The fire broke out in a block following a suicide attempt. 40 people were crammed into a very small cell.

There are injuries. The other blocks were not immediately informed.

As the evening progresses, the information we get speaks of a spreading fire, an evacuated CRA, prisoners in the car park, a mass of cops and firemen. In short, “it’s a mess” says a prisoner.

The prisoners want to make it known that they are in danger and want the news to get out, and that journalists to be alerted

1/03 – Today’s news:

Part of the new CRA in Lyon burned down in a fire yesterday. Contrary to what the media reported, the prisoners claim that it was not an accident or a suicide attempt but an act of protest.

Following the fire, all the prisoners were left outside the buildings in the cold for several hours. They were then brought back to the detention center and crammed into a block. There were not enough mattresses for everyone. The conditions last night were therefore particularly difficult.

Many people were injured, several people had to be hospitalised in a serious condition. Others had to make do with a quick examination by the CRA doctors, even though they had been exposed to heavy smoke for several minutes.

Police repression was strong. Several people were taken into police custody.

The prisoners of the Lyon CRA are protesting against their confinement. Let’s support them!
