THE BORDER HAS KILLED AGAIN!

Another person has died on the French-Italian border of Montgenèvre. Another dead person, another body lying lifelessly face down was found on the high trail, on the so-called military road, from Claviere (Valsusa, IT) to Briancon (FR).
Yet another dead body found in these mountains on Monday the 7th 2023. Another person killed on a racist border. While driveways are crossed daily by cars, buses and trains, which bring tourists, goods and military forces, people on the move are forced to walk through the mountain paths, escaping the controls of the French police even through the woods at 1800 m altitude. It seems that the dead person was found by a cyclist, one of the many tourists and hikers who spend their summer vacation in these mountains. They frolic on the same roads that are traversed night and day by people on the move who have to hide because not having the “right document”. Over the last years, at least 10 other people have lost their lives trying to cross the upper-Val di Susa border. While tourists enjoy their Golf match with their thousand-euro slayers on an impeccable lawn owned by Lavazza and the Montgenèvre municipality, dozens of people on the move die or risk their life at the same border.

We do not have much information about what happened, but we know for sure that those who killed again were the armed wing of the state – the police, the gendarmerie, the border police (PAF). An armed wing with jeeps, drones and night-vision goggles that tries to protect the national interests of a neocolonial and racist state, widening and narrowing the mesh of this internal European border that continues to separate, repress and kill people. Like the Niger desert, the prisons in Libya and Tunisia, the Mediterranean Sea, the English Channel, the Melilla border, the eastern borders from the Balcans to Poland, and the numerous Italian detention centers, the Val di Susa mountains have been for years a frontier where people keep dying. To kill again has not been the mountains, the snow, the cold, or the fatigue. To kill has been again the state, the European Fortress, the frontier system embodied in people in uniform, beating the trails and doing a manhunt; to kill has been all those indifferent people who don´t question their white bourgeois privileges, while next people born on the “wrong” side of the world suffer and die in the general silence.

This weekend there was a call for a NoBorders camp, with the idea that collectively crossing that murderous border would have prevent the people on the move to be exposed alone to police violence, at least for once. However, the police blocked the passage, deploying with all their typical weapons in the mountain paths, armed with tear gas, shields, TNT bombs, and stun granade. We could not cross. Today, two days after this attempt, the body was found.
If borders did not exist, people wouldn´t die on these mountains.
